It results in a point for the server. ASSIST: Setting the ball up for a teammate who attacks the ball and then scores a point. An assist is counted only if the very next shot results in a point. ATTACK: The act of actually approaching the volleyball and hitting it, in order to gain a point.
Cover. The attack is blocked back onto the attacker’s side but a member of the same team digs the ball and the rally continues. A textbook rally would follow this pattern of contacts: Serve, pass, set, hit, dig, set, hit, dig, etc. with the possibility of having a stuff block, covered block or deflection as well.
This format is hardly ever used anymore. Double Elimination, Modern Crossover: If you hear somebody say “Double Elim,” this is likely the format they are talking about. This is the tournament format that the AVP currently uses. Lose two and you’re eliminated, until the Semis; then it’s win or go home.
The player who passes the ball is called the “passer”. Usually a pass is made with a player’s forearms but can also be made overhead with two open hands. Set – The second contact (after a pass or dig) is considered a “set”. The player who sets is called the “setter”. Usually a set is made with two hands overhead.
One. A one set is a quick set to the middle. Three. A three set is a quick set about half way between the outside and middle. Five Set. A five ball is a back set to the right side hitter. Ten. A ten is a set that's set to a back row attacker. The ball is set to be attacked near the 3 meter attack line (10 foot line).
A volleyball game consists of two teams of six players each, separated by a net. The six volleyball court positions are setter, middle blocker, outside hitter, opposite hitter, libero and serving specialist. To start, flip a coin to determine which team serves the ball first.
